Arc Thrift of Colorado is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the rights of individuals with developmental disabilities (Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism and all forms of cognitive deficit) across Colorado. The 12 Arc chapters supported by Arc Thrift perform individual and systemic advocacy on behalf of thousands of children and adults with developmental disabilities, and help these individuals find jobs; get housing; get needed medical services, and obtain needed services in schools. In addition, Arc Thrift is one of the largest employers of persons with developmental disabilities in the State of Colorado, and also provides employment and health insurance for a number of other at-risk populations including the homeless; women from safe houses; refugees; minorities; seniors; veterans; Katrina evacuees; ex-offenders; and persons with histories of substance abuse. Arc Thrift also conducts the second largest food drive in the State of Colorado (last year nearly 110 tons of food were collected to provide for senior meals on wheels programs and soup kitchens and food pantries) and collects in excess of 40 million pounds of donated clothing and other household items which enhances the recycling and greening of the communities it serves. Arc Thrift works with hundreds of non-profits locally and nationally through its car donation programs and other community partners including Volunteers of America, KUSA Channel 9, Down Syndrome Education Fund, Clinica Tepeyac, Su Teatro, KRFX, Fox 31, and many, many other important community partners across Colorado. Arc Thrift is the recipient of numerous prestigious community awards, including the Arc of Pikes Peak President's Award, the Spirit de Tlatelolco Business Leadership Award, and the NEWSED Celebrate Culture Civil Rights Award for our work with persons with disabilities and other at risk populations. Lloyd Lewis, father of a six-year old with Down syndrome, and a four-year old with sensory processing disorder, serves as President and CEO for Arc Thrift. Mr. Lewis also serves on the Boards of Mile High Down Syndrome Association, Stout Street Foundation and Life Advancement Center. |
